Indian Railways Sets New Records in Freight Volume and Revenue

News: Indian Railways has achieved record freight loading and revenue for the fourth consecutive year in FY 2025, transporting 1.61 billion tonnes and surpassing the US to become the world’s second-largest rail freight carrier after China.

Total revenue reached ₹2.62 lakh crore, with capital expenditure at ₹2.65 lakh crore. While passenger revenue stood at ₹75,000 crore, short of the ₹80,000 crore target, events like the Kumbh Mela boosted ridership. 

Coal led cargo volumes at 817 million tonnes, improving thermal power plant stocks. Container traffic rose 10%, and parcel volumes grew 29% to 1.3 million tonnes. Scrap sales brought in ₹6,500 crore. Indian Railways continues to expand its diversified revenue streams and logistical dominance.
