Government Denies Satellite-Based Tolling Launch

News: The Indian government has denied reports of a satellite-based tolling rollout from May 1, 2025, confirming no such plan exists. Instead, it is focusing on a barrier-less tolling system using Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag technology.
This hybrid system allows vehicles to pass toll plazas without stopping, using ANPR cameras to identify vehicles and FASTag for automatic toll deductions.
Non-compliance may lead to digital penalties and account blocks. Pilot installations are underway at select plazas to test efficiency and public response.
While FASTag is already used nationwide across 1,150+ toll booths for cashless, contactless tolling, the ANPR-FASTag upgrade aims to further streamline toll collection and reduce congestion on India’s highways.
