Government Anticipates Rise in Imports from China

News: Amid US-China trade tensions, India anticipates a potential surge in Chinese imports as exporters seek alternative markets. To address this, the government has formed an inter-ministerial import surge monitoring group, including officials from the Commerce Department, DGFT, CBIC, and DPIIT.

This group tracks import trends and can recommend trade remedies like anti-dumping duties if needed.

The Commerce Ministry noted that steep US tariffs on Chinese goods could lead to redirection of exports to India. A DGFT help desk launched on April 11 allows real-time alerts from traders.

Additionally, concerns about excess goods from Vietnam and Indonesia impacting local industries have been raised. The government is also planning an Export Promotion Mission to boost outbound trade while managing inbound risks.
