Supreme Court Allows LMV Drivers to Operate Transport Vehicles

News: The Supreme Court has ruled that Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) license holders can legally operate transport vehicles weighing up to 7,500 kilograms.

This landmark decision, led by a Constitution bench under CJI DY Chandrachud, resolves legal uncertainties, benefiting thousands of drivers and simplifying insurance claim processes.

The court rejected insurers’ practice of denying claims involving transport vehicles in this weight category, affirming LMV drivers’ eligibility. Emphasizing road safety, the court noted that factors like seatbelt non-compliance, mobile use, and impaired driving, rather than LMV drivers, are primary contributors to India’s 170,000 annual road accident deaths. Public biases on driver behavior were also addressed.
